In honor of our veterans

The Top of Iowa Quilt Club sews patriotic quilts to donate to our local veterans. This has been done in past years, but the club made the decision to submit an article to the Lake Mills Graphic, about one veteran who receives a quilt each month. If you know any senior veterans that have not yet received a quilt, please contact Bill Clark or Robin Grunhovd.
The first featured veteran is Harold Hurley. In 1948, Harold went into war at the young age of 16. He was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Willow Grove, Penn. During his senior year in high school, he was active with the Marine Corps, VMF451 Air Squadron.
Two months after the Korean War started, June 25, 1950, his squadron was activated. They were moved to MCAS L Terra, Calif., for further training, before going on the carrier USS Sicily, that was headed to Korea. Harold spent one year and three months there, before departing back to L Terra, Calif. He was later given an honorable discharge in 1964.
Harold was Commander of the Osage VFW and Legion Post after returning home. He was also a member of the Legion Memorial Squad at that time and still today, is active, serving with the Lake Mills Memorial Squad on occasion.
