Competitive Dance Team Beginning at NIACC this Fall

North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) is excited to announce the addition of a Dance Team this fall.  Dance Team is a growing sport in Iowa.  There are more than 270 high school dance teams and over 25 college dance teams in the state.  A record 5,000 dancers competed at the Iowa State Dance Team Championships this year.
“As part of our commitment to continually explore extra-curricular opportunities for our students, we are very excited about the addition of Dance Team to our current roster of activities,” says Steve Schulz, NIACC President.
The NIACC Trojan Dance Team will be a 15-25 member performance and competitive based team.  The dance team will perform at half-time during Trojan athletic events.  They will also compete at the Iowa State Dance Team Competition.  They will perform pom, jazz, and hip hop routines that are technically demanding, high energy, and crowd pleasing.
“We are happy to be able to add this popular activity as part of the total college experience for both current and future students,” commented NIACC Athletic Director Dan Mason.
Tina Wihlm, a NIACC alum, will be coaching the team.  Coach Wihlm has over 20 years of experience instructing and coaching dance.  She founded the award-winning Newman Catholic Dance Team in 2002 and has been the head coach there for 14 years.  She lead the Newman Catholic Dance Team to a State Championship in 2015 and the team has placed in the top three on several other occasions.  Mason says, “Wihlm has a reputation for professionalism and for building authentic relationships as a strong role model when working with dancers.  She has high expectations for her dancers, and has the ability to see pathways to success for each individual dancer.”
Coach Wihlm says that Trojan Dancers should be prepared to be totally committed to the program and understand that attendance at all practices, performances, and special events is required. Dancers are expected to carry themselves with pride, high standards, and good judgment, knowing that their actions and behavior reflect upon their team and North Iowa Area Community College.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to coach Dance Team at NIACC.  I am looking forward to building a successful, competitive program and can’t wait to get started,” says Coach Wihlm.
