Happenings at the Library

At the library, we are always looking ahead. At this time of year looking ahead isn’t so bad. It means winter is almost over and spring is right around the corner. Spring at the library means lots of fun activities, as we celebrate National Library Week in April and Children’s Book Week in May. We didn’t want March to feel left out, so we have three great programs to offer you, plus a chance to win an iPad.
Our Adult Winter Reading Program is off to a great start, but you still have plenty of time to sign-up. This program runs through March and only requires you to read. For every five books you read, you earn a small prize and will be entered to win one of our grand prizes. Grand prizes are gift certificates to local businesses. What counts? Any book you read or listen to from now through March. What about e-books and e-audiobooks? They count too. Stop into the library for a punch card anytime and get reading.
Our second Adult-Only Craft Night is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. This time around we will be making String Art. We will have multiple designs available, but if you have something specific in mind, let us know. This event is open to the public and free, including all supplies, but we do ask everyone bring their own hammer. Reservations aren’t required, but welcome, so we can have enough supplies on hand.
On Thursday, March 15, at 7 p.m., we are excited to have Dan Kaercher here to present a program titled “Iowa’s Hidden Treasures.” Mr. Kaercher is founding editor-in-chief of Midwest Living Magazine and former IPTV host of “Iowa’s Simple Pleasures.” Mr. Kaercher has spent time in all 99 counties of Iowa, looking for all the hidden gems the state has to offer. This program has received funding from Humanities Iowa, a private, non-profit state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. A cultural resource for Iowans since 1971, Humanities Iowa offers many cultural and historical programs and grants to Iowa’s communities. This event is free and open to the public. Please call with any questions.
March also features some fun for the kids. Our first children’s event is all about Robots. Join us Tuesday, March 6, anytime between 3:30-6 p.m. to experiment with robots. We will have robots to build, robot crafts, Lego robot challenges, and more. This event is sure to be a hit with any robot or Lego lovers in your life. This is a come-and-go event with no registration required.
We had so much fun offering free meals over Winter Break, that we have decided to do it over Spring Break as well. This program will feature free lunches for children and teens at the library and will be loosely based on the Summer Food and Fun Program. Lunches will be served at the library from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., followed by an activity at 1 p.m. Below is a schedule for the lunches and activities:
Monday, March 19, Turkey Sandwiches and Bingo
Tuesday, March 20, Sloppy Joes and Spring Crafts
Wednesday, March 21, Hot Dogs and Breakout Box
Thursday, March 22, Tacos in a Bag and Lisa Ralls
Friday, March 23, Cook’s Choice and Legos
All children and teens are welcome to join us and no registration is required. If you would like to donate time or money to this program, or have questions, please contact the library at 641-592-0092 or by email at librarydirector@wctatel.net.
