Vacation phone scam
Many Lake Mills are receiving scam calls from Marriott or Hilton hotels offering a free night’s stay or a free vacation.
These seem to be computer generated spoof numbers from local cell phone numbers such as 590-1111 .
Lake Mills Police Chief, Dave Thomas, said he had personal knowlege of the scam. “I received one (call) just last night around 8 p.m. from a local number and answered and it was the Marriott scam,’ he explained. “Today a father of a student called me and asked if I needed to talk to his son. I told him no and he wanted to know why I had called him. I explained the scam and he said that a friend had received two of these yesterday.”
The scam if you take advantage of it will go as far as getting personal information and possibly even a credit card number to temporarily your room for confirmation purposes. Marriot and Hilton are aware of this scam and are not indorsing any automated calling promo. The scam info is on the internet if you google in Marriot scam.
