Lloyd Okland
Lloyd Okland, 97, Lake Mills, passed away peacefully Monday, July 22, 2024 at the Lake Mills Care Center.Visitation for Lloyd will be held Friday, Aug. 2, from 5-7 p.m. at Schott Funeral Homes-Mittelstadt Chapel, Lake Mills. There will be a time for family and friends to share memories beginning at 6:30 p.m. Memorial services for Lloyd will take place at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 3, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills, with Pastor Melinda McVey officiating, with a visitation continuing one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will follow the service at Salem Memorial Cemetery, rural Lake Mills.
Lloyd J. Okland was born Nov. 9, 1926 to parents S.T. and Christina Okland at home on a farm in Winnebago County. Growing up, he attended school in Leland. Lloyd was baptized at Lake Mills Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dec. 12, 1926 and he was confirmed at Center Lutheran Church.
Lloyd lived on the family farm until he met and married June Perkins in 1948. Six daughters were born to this marriage. The couple would later divorce. On Sept. 2, 1975, he married Margaret (Schmidt) Shifflett and he helped raise her five children.
Lloyd found his career in life as an auto mechanic. He worked for Ford dealerships for over 50 years. He worked in Charles City, New Ulm, Minn., California, and moved back to Iowa in 1972. He worked in Emmons, Minn., briefly before opening his own shop in Lake Mills for a few years. After “semi-retiring,” he went to work for the City of Lake Mills in the Parks and Rec Department until 2006. It was at that time where he had a stroke, and unfortunately kept him from doing some of his favorite hobbies: fishing and golfing.
Lloyd and Margaret lived all their married life in Lake Mills where they were members of Salem Lutheran Church, where was an active member of the Men’s Brotherhood and an usher.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 48 years, Margaret Okland; daughters: Kristine Nelson (Les Bond); Sandy Recor (Hank); Renee Ross (Fred); Kim Norman (Robert); and Laurie Waters; stepchildren: Craig Shifflett (Kari); Scott Shifflett (Vicky); Brian Shifflett (Kathy); and Heather Albrecht (Steven); 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; 12-great-great-grandchildren; as well as several other nieces, nephews, and extended relatives.
He is preceded in death by both parents; a daughter, Barb Rosa; son in-law, Dave Waters; stepson, Cordell Shifflett; great-grandson, Matthew Fox; six brothers and their wives; four sisters and their husbands; three brothers in-law and their wives; three sisters in-law and their husbands; as well as several nieces and nephews.
