Mavis Holstad Bergo
Mavis Bergo, 95, Lake Mills, passed away Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at the Lutheran Retirement Home, Northwood. Memorial services for Mavis will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 16, at Sion Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Mark Decker and Mike Holstad, Lay Minister, officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will follow the service at Sion Lutheran Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Sion Lutheran Church.
Mavis (Holstad) was born June 9, 1930 in rural Lake Mills, to parents John and Edith (Nelson) Holstad. She grew up “on a horse’s back” living outside of Lake Mills in her early childhood, and moving to rural Kiester until 1944, when she would return back to the Lake Mills area.
She loved being outdoors and on helping on the farm, like milking cows with her dad, and always had a love for dogs, which she had throughout her entire life. She graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1948.
On Aug. 21, 1949, she was united in marriage to Ernest Bergo at Sion Lutheran Church. To this union, three sons were born: Bryan, Mark, and Tim.
Mavis worked as a cook for the Lake Mills Care Center for over 40 years. She also cooked at Rice Lake Country Club, Lake Mills Daycare, and David’s Superfoods. When she wasn’t cooking at work, she was baking at home. Mavis was known for her lefse. She made and sold lefse for over 70 years.
Mavis is survived by her sons: Mark (Carol) Bergo, Northwood; and Tim Bergo, Lake Mills; daughter-in-law, Roxanne Bergo, Mankato, Minn.; grandchildren: Jeremy (Amy Kilgore) Bergo, Justin Bergo, Jeremy S. Bergo, and Nicole (Phil) Richter; great-granddaughter, Sierra Bergo; siblings: Dean Holstad, Lake Mills; Eva Haroldson, Albert Lea, Minn.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Holstad, Rosemont, Minn.; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Bergo; son, Bryan Bergo; two children in infancy; siblings: Virgil (Helen) Holstad and Jerry Holstad; brother in-law, Milt Haroldson; and a sister in-law, Senora Holstad.
