Muriel E. Rognes
Muriel E. Rognes, 96, passed away Saturday, July 20, 2019 at the Lake Mills Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 23, at Salem Lutheran Church, Lake Mills with Pastor Melinda McCluskey officiating. Inurnment will take place at Beaver Creek Cemetery at a later time. Visitation will be Monday, July 22, from 5-7p.m. at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be directed to MercyOne Hospice, Mason City, or to the Beaver Creek Cemetery Association, c/o Jerry Fjeld, Joice.
Muriel Elaine (Petersburg) Rognes was born on the family farm near Joice, Aug. 24, 1922, to Edwin and Mabel (Suby) Petersburg. She was baptized and confirmed at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. Muriel grew up on the family farm with four brothers. She attended country school and graduated from Joice High School.
Muriel was united in marriage to her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Oswald Rognes, Feb. 26, 1943, at Beaver Creek Lutheran Church. To this union five children were born: Michael, Dennis, Linda, Becky, and Todd.
Muriel loved being a homemaker and raising her family on the farm. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and baking, especially lefse and kringla. She loved to quilt and crochet and made quilts and afghans for each of her children and grandchildren. She and Ozzie were members of Salem Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School and participated in WELCA. Later in life, she enjoyed living at Rice Lake and spending her winters in Texas with Ozzie. She took up golf late in life, recording two “holes-in-one.” She enjoyed playing games and spending time with her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and friends.
Muriel is survived by her son, Michael (Jean) Rognes, Albert Lea, Minn.; son, Dennis (LuAnne) Rognes, Lake Mills; daughter, Linda (Maury) Hope, Ankeny; daughter, Becky (Steve) Johnson, Albert Lea, Minn.; and son, Todd (Susan) Rognes, Clear Lake; 10 grandchildren: Paul (Becky) Rognes, Elizabeth (Jason Johnson) Rognes, Kjersti Rognes, Charles (Jamie) Rognes, Matt (Laura Zaugg) Hope, Stephanie (Jeff) Summy, Scott Johnson, Ellie (Garret) Schumaker, Chandler Rognes, Reed Rognes; 12 great-grandchildren: Lindsey and Leah Rognes, Nelson and Ingrid Rognes-Johnson, Raelynn Rognes, Jackson, Grant, Cooper, Cal, and Henry Summy, Landon Johnson and Owen Schumaker; one brother, Floyd (Marian) Petersburg, Clear Lake; sisters-in-law: Junice Bang, Norma Barville, Shirley Petersburg, Rosella Purcell, Loretta Rognes, and Colleen Rogness; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 76 years, Oswald Rognes; her parents; a grandson, Mark Rognes; three brothers: Donald Petersburg, James (Bud) Petersburg, and Marlin Petersburg; father-in-law and mother-in-law Alfred and Jenette Rognes; and other relatives and friends.
