Roger D. Nelson

March 4, 1931 – July 7, 2022

Roger D. Nelson, 91, Forest City, passed away Thursday, July 7, 2022, at the Lake Mills Care Center. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, July 14, at Schott Funeral Home, Forest City, with Mr. Kermit Singelstad officiating. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service on Thursday. Inurnment will follow services at Oakland Cemetery, Forest City, with military honors being performed by the Leland Post #6161.
Roger Dean Nelson was born March 4, 1931, to Sewell and Rosalia (Hanson) Nelson. He graduated from Forest City High School in 1949. He was drafted into the United States Army to serve in the Korean War. He served his country honorably from 1952-1954 and re-enlisted in the Army Reserves from 1954-1960. He was very proud of his military service.
After his service to our country, he returned home to farm, and would later work at fertilizer plants and then at Winnebago Industries, where he worked for over 20 years, retiring in 1995. He also helped other local farmers with their farm work.
Roger enjoyed bicycling, cross country skiing, walking, and horseback riding. Roger raised and sold horses for many years. He also enjoyed going to consignment sales, vehicles and machinery, and drives through the countryside. The morning coffee at Sid’s with his buddies was also a daily routine and highlight for many years. Most of all, he loved his family, and was his grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s biggest fan at sporting events and other activities. Roger loved life and enjoyed living it to the fullest.
He is survived by his children: Fred (Beth) Nelson, Lake Mills; Bruce (Linda) Nelson, Forest City; and Gail (Gary) McCarthy, Forest City; grandchildren: Jill (Brian) Budach, Rob (Nicole) Nelson, Ryan (Ellie) McCarthy, Laura (Tyler) Thorson, Kristen (Colton) Sankey, and Sarah (fiancée, Taylor) Nelson; great-grandchildren: Makenzie and Kalli Budach, Haylie, Brayden, and Hannah Nelson, Keegan and Kennady Sankey; sister, Iris Koons, Swea City; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.
Roger is preceded in death by both parents; granddaughter, Kelly McCarthy; great-granddaughter, Taryn Budach; sister and brother-in-law, Doris (Ken) Anderson; brother, Owen Nelson; brother in-law, Jim Koons; nephew, Karl Anderson; and niece, Nancy Anderson.
