Yvonne M. Helgeson

Yvonne M. Helgeson, 68, Lake Mills, passed away peacefully Monday, March 31, 2025 surrounded by loved ones at MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, Mason City. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, April 4, at Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills,  with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service the church. The service will also be livestreamed on the One In Christ Parish YouTube Page: https://www.youtube.com/@oneinchristlutheranparish1767. Yvonne Marie (Westmoreland) was born Aug. 7, 1956 in San Diego, Calif., to parents Burton and Betty (Floyd) Westmoreland. 
The family moved frequently in Yvonne’s younger years, eventually settling in Mason City, where she attended grade school. 
From an early age, she, along with her siblings, worked at their mother’s sewing shop in Mason City, which is where her lifelong passion for quilting first began.  Yvonne graduated from Mason City High School in 1975.  She continued her education at NIACC, later graduating with a AA in Business. 
Yvonne married Scott Helgeson and moved to Lake Mills, where her two sons were born—Steven and Brian.  The couple later divorced. 
Aside from staying home to raise her two children, Yvonne worked at Larson Manufacturing for a number of years, as well as in the office at Fleetguard, and helped numerous families in their time of need as an aide with Hospice of North Iowa.  Yvonne also enjoyed the time she spent working at the Lake Mills Community Preschool and Daycare in more recent years. 
Quilting, gardening, baking pies, and going for walks are just a few things Yvonne enjoyed, but above all else, children always held a special place in her heart.  She loved attending the events for “her little people” and also volunteered her time to help in children’s ministry at Winnebago Lutheran Church.  Children were always sure to put a smile on her face. 
Surviving members of her family include her son, Steven (Allison) Helgeson and their children, Ellie, Scott and Kyle; son, Brian (Lauren) Helgeson and their children, Clayton and Weston; siblings: Diane (Larry) Miller, Sheri Westmoreland-Lee, Sharon (Michael) Strathman, and Kevin (Joni) Savage; as well as several other extended relatives and close friends.
She is preceded in death by both parents, Burton and Betty Westmoreland.
